The Icing on the Cake Resource Packs

Language resources made easy for every parent, teacher and speech pathologist.

Supporting a child with language and literacy issues can feel overwhelming. Where do I start? What can I do? We’ve created resources that you can use with your child at home, or with students in your class. The Icing on the Cake resources combine with books available online, on YouTube, or your local library or bookstore. They show you how to break down the overwhelming “too hard” into a series of manageable steps.

  • Accessible, affordable guides to help you support your child’s spoken language
  • Downloadable worksheet and lesson plan packs for 21 popular children’s books

We believe language is for everybody, no matter their challenges.

No matter how complex the challenges may be, we are firm believers that everybody should have–and can have–access to the world of meaning through language and reading.

Our resources have been developed by speech pathologists. They are based on researched understanding of the ways in which language develops, and on how to support it.

Don’t be overwhelmed. Our packs are designed to help make the complex, simple –  and to help you support language learning in the children you care for.

But what if I'm not a teacher...

The good news is you don’t need to be.

Every Icing on the Cake pack provides detailed how-to instructions. It tells you how to approach the book with a page-by-page breakdown.

We provide all the relevant notes and research for you to understand the background of why it works. At the same time, keeping it simple enough for you to just dive in and do it without being bogged down in detail.

For each Icing on the Cake pack you’ll find a series of research-based questions to work through with your child. These use Blank’s Levels of Questioning to guide the child from the concrete to the abstract, with so many opportunities for language enrichment along the way. There are also key vocabulary targets, and evidence based methods to help ensure that these words are learnt in a meaningful and robust way. We provide phonological awareness tasks for every story, providing the opportunity to hear, play with and manipulate key words, rhymes, syllables and sounds – and there are suggestions for a range of engaging ways to extend this learning.
